Having lived in both America and the United Kingdom, there is definitely a noticeable, palpable difference in the atmosphere. Walking from London Euston to London Waterloo at 2am never frightened me at all, but a mid-afternoon trip to a laundrette in North Charleston, South Carolina, often left me rattled. I’ve slept rough in England, something I’d never consider trying in America. It’s just simply not as dangerous for women in Europe(but that is not to say 100% safe) as it is in America.
